A masterpiece of the Hoysala Empire in Halebidu. Karnataka, India.
Built in the 12th century CE
The temple was commissioned by
King Vishnuvardhana
Dedicated to Lord Shiva.
The Hoysaleswara Temple is famous for its intricate stone carvings
Which cover nearly every inch of its walls.
Deities, dancers, mythical beasts, epic scenes from the
Ramayana, Mahabharata, and Puranas
As well as everyday life — all are rendered with extraordinary detail.
The temple is built in the distinctive Hoysala architectural style
Characterized by star-shaped platforms
Ornate pillars,
and finely chiseled stone sculptures
that seem almost alive.
Halebidu
(meaning “old city”) was the capital of the
Hoysala Empire, which flourished between the
11th and 14th centuries CE.
At its peak, the empire controlled much of southern India
And became a center of art, culture, and temple architecture.
Although the temple was partially damaged during invasions in the 14th century
It's artistry endures as one of the most stunning examples of medieval Indian architecture
