Why should we stop eating imported fruits, from an Indian mango farmers perspective.
While at Vaidya kaka's farm in the quaint village called Phungus, Ratnagiri, we discussed various aspects that affect agriculture, primarily fruits like mangoes and cashews.
The conversations were about his passion about planting more mangoes even when it's becoming difficult, the struggles of a farmer in that region (which range from crop based issues, land based issues, labour issues and working with authorities), the history of farming in the region, other political issues that affect farming directly and indirectly AND about the synthetic chemicals usage, how it can be phased out systematically or atleast can be used in a controlled manner - keeping human health, soil health and health of other organisms in mind (while still being smart about how it can be economically sustainable).
This led us to exports which can be financially rewarding but there is a huge give and take if you consider every other aspect that comes along with financial gains.
Vaidya kaka himself tried exports where he learnt about the reality of the channel. He says, the amount of chemicals and unwanted layers of spraying that exporting a fruit requires is a grey area and if you see it from an angle of using simple human common sense - it might surely not be great for our health and would have much lesser nutrition when compared to fresher local fruits.
It's an area for discussion. Is it always great to import fruits when we have abundance in our own country.
